Messina’s ‘Juliette’ Gelato Cake

Ice cream and Gelato would have to be some of my favourite sweet treats. They make you feel satisfied in times of need, turns things around when you are down and bring that little extra bit of excitement to your life.

Voted the best gelato in Australia by Good Food Guide, who wouldn’t want to dive into one of ‘Messina’s’ famous gelato cakes? After much thought on what to give our family friend for her birthday, I knew it was the right time to do so. We went with ‘Juliette’ a gorgeous rectangle gelato cake decorated with elegant peaks of meringue and jewels of berries. It was perfect for the occasion even though it was their only cake that would fit in our eski!

Starting from the bottom. The sponge soaked in Marsala syrup was thin and created a subtle texture. However it could have been slightly thicker for my liking. The wild strawberry sorbet was nice and sweet and had more of an intense flavour and darker colour compared to the strawberry gelato. I really liked the combination of the cream layer and gelato, as it tasted like strawberry and cream lollies. The rest of the rectangle filled with strawberry gelato was heavenly. With an endless amount of flavours, strawberry would not have been my preferred choice when going out for gelato however it will be now!

The Italian meringue and raspberries decorated the cake beautifully. Without this lovely touch the cake would have not looked nor tasted as delicious. The meringue was exquisite. It had a firm and bouncy consistency while adding a sugary pop to each spoonful. I wish the whole cake was covered in meringue, as it was just so intriguing and unique. I am looking forward to trying their Bombe Alaska

The wild strawberries covered in gel, laid in the crevices of the meringue and provided sweetness to the cake and were full of flavour. I would be very content if I had a bowl of these juicy berries mixed with the meringue!

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the cake and it was a splendid ending to the night. For those hosting a dinner party, this cake is great if you’re having a heavy meal as it is light and refreshing. We will definitely be regular customers at Messina’s!!

Happy Birthday Mary!
